The LITA/LSSI Minority Scholarship Foundation has been helping young students in reaching their higher education goals since it was established in 1994.
The scholarship is provided by the Library and Information Technology Association with the aim to support qualified persons plan to follow a career in that field.
Full Description
The LITA/LSSI Minority Scholarship is awarded annually in the amount of $2,500 so as to promote and advance the librarian profession.
Who's eligible?
The future scholars have to demonstrate potential in the use of automated systems in libraries while belonging to a principal minority group – American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, African-American, or Hispanic.
The recipient must be the U.S. or Canadian citizen and this scholarship is for study in an ALA Accredited Master of Library Science (MLS) program.
How to Apply
The completion of the application is the responsibility of the applicant and according to the information provided through the application package, the committee will make a selection.
Three things the awarding of this scholarship will be based on are:
a) academic excellence
b) leadership
c) evidence of commitment to a career in librarianship.
Recipients will be notified by phone after June 1st, while the other applicants will be notified by e-mail after July 1st.
So, it is very important that you provide accurate information when filling in the application form about both your personal and educational detail.
The scholarship application and the reference forms are both online submissions and are available until March 1 st.
The following items are required for all scholarship applications.
The eligible applicant has to submit a completed online application, accompanied with a personal statement, as well as three letters of reference, completed on the official online form.
Furthermore, the official academic transcripts from institutions where they received their bachelor’s degree and from institutions where they are currently enrolled in an MLIS program are required.
Official transcripts can be sent directly from the institution or mailed in the unopened envelope as and they have to be received on or before March 1st.
