The CGCS-Bernard Harris Scholarship Program’s main aim is to encourage minority students to pursue higher education degrees in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and math.

The CGCS-Bernard Harris Scholarship Program was created by former NASA astronaut Dr. Bernard Harris, the first African-American to walk in space and it is named after him, so as to honor all his achievements and merits.

The foundation wants to support young men and women in their striving to create a brighter future for themselves and become leaders.

Full Description

This is an outstanding $5,000 scholarship which will be awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students who are currently completing their senior year of high school which is a member district of the Council of the Great City Schools.

The winners of the scholarship will be chosen among several hundred applicants in urban school districts.

The selection will be made based on their academic performance, leadership qualities and community involvement and the scholarship committee will determine the most deserving candidates.

The $5,000 award can be used for continued education in a STEM-related field.

Who's eligible?

If you are wondering whether you are eligible for this award, we can say that eligible applicants are African-American and Hispanic seniors from high schools in four of the 75 urban school districts represented by the Council.

A good thing to know is that students in Toronto are not eligible.

All applicants must attend a public school in a Council of Great City Schools district.
