The GEM organization is there to offer both MS and Ph.D. level students who need financial help to enter and achieve degrees at Universities in the nation.
The main aim of GEM is to give opportunities to individuals through three fellowship programs: MS Engineering, Ph.D. Engineering and Ph.D. Science and to increase the number of minority students who pursue higher education degrees.

What the scholarship includes for a Ph.D. Engineering/Science student besides the $16,000 award is a living stipend up to the 5th year of PhD program, a minimum of one paid summer internship with a GEM Employer Member and full tuition and fees at a GEM University Member.
Who's eligible?
So as to be eligible for this amazing scholarship, you will need to meet certain requirements and it is advisable not to apply if you are not able to fulfill them.
The eligible candidates are only the members of the following under-represented groups in science and engineering as defined by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics:
- American Indian/Native
- African American/Black
- Hispanic American/Latino
They need to be citizens of the U.S. or U.S. permanent residents.
He/she must be a senior, masters student, or graduate of an accredited engineering or applied science program at the time of application with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
Additionally, applicants must apply to a minimum of three GEM Member Universities STEM graduate departments and they must be admitted into a GEM Member University graduate program with confirmed department funding support before the GEM Fellowship is awarded.
Furthermore, applicants are encouraged to take the GRE and they will be asked to provide test dates and/or GRE scores when available.
The requirement is that students need to attend a GEM Member University, maintain satisfactory progress and abide by the guidelines of the GEM Employer sponsor.

The application process starts on July 1st and finishes on November 12th, so it is important to provide the necessary documentation before the deadline.
