Sheryl A. Horak Law Enforcement Explorer Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship is named after a 15-year-old Sheryl Ann Horak who joined Bettendorf Police Department Explorer Post No. 9611 in Iowa and participated in a wide range of post activities.

The Sheryl A. Horak Memorial Endowment has the aim to provide financial support to law enforcement Explorers who demonstrate superior potential as career law enforcement executives.

Full Description

The Sheryl A. Horak Law Enforcement Explorer Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based award and the lucky recipient will get a $1,000, one-time scholarship.

He/she will be presented at the national law enforcement explorer conference or a local ceremony.

The number of scholarships awarded is dependent on the profit of the endowment.

Who's eligible?

The Sheryl A. Horak Law Enforcement Explorer Memorial Scholarship is available to any law enforcement Explorer who is at least in the 12th grade.

Ineligible applicants will not be taken into consideration.

The winner will be determined according to the academic record, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and personal statement on “Why I want to pursue a career in law enforcement.”

How to Apply

The application process for the Sheryl A. Horak Law Enforcement Explorer Memorial Scholarship is the following:

The candidate should complete the application with honest and accurate answers to all the required questions.

He/she need to secure the certification of the Post Advisor, Head of the participating organization and Learning for Life representative.

Furthermore, the eligible applicant should submit

  • Three letters of recommendation, two of which should be from people outside of law enforcement
  • A 500-word essay on “Why I want to pursue a career in law enforcement”
  • A transcript of his/her high school record and if the person is in college, he/she should submit both college and high school transcripts
  • A black-and-white glossy photo preferably in uniform which will be published in case the person is selected as a winner.

The original and a copy of the completed application and supporting materials must be received before the deadline on March 31.
