Society of Professional Journalists Buffalo Chapter Scholarship Fund

The Greater Buffalo International Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is very proud of the fact that it has awarded more than $127,000 in scholarships to nearly 150 individuals since 1978 when the first award was provided.

Full Description

We have to mention that the award amount and the number of recipients vary each year and is determined depending on the number of quality candidates, so Greater Buffalo-area college students who are studying communications, along with professional journalists are highly encouraged to try their luck now and apply for this college and graduate school scholarship for the upcoming academic year.

Who's eligible?

The criteria determined for the winner selection is that applicants must be residents of Western New York, Northwestern Pennsylvania or Southern Ontario and they need to be attending accredited colleges in the U.S. or Canada that offer courses to enhance journalism training.

Furthermore, a good thing to know is that those students who reside outside the chapter area but attend college in Western New York are also eligible.

Applicants must be prospective college juniors, seniors or graduate students, or working journalists.

Ineligible applicant’s application forms will not be taken into consideration.

How to Apply

During the application process, the applicant has to submit the evidence of competence in writing, broadcasting or related journalistic skills.

Also, the explanation of financial need is desirable as the aim of this award is to support students who are struggling with educational expenses.

Additionally, applicants must include a brief statement in which they will speak about their motivation and commitment to a career in journalism.

Last, but not least, the letters of recommendation from an instructor or supervisor must be attached to the application.
