The Sonny Roden Memorial Scholarship is $2,500 and is awarded annually by Virginia Water Environment Association.
The main aim of this award is to support the local universities and to promote student participation in VWEA.
The Sonny Roden Memorial Scholarship program has noticed the importance of supporting students enrolled at Virginia universities in an environmental engineering or physical science graduate program who are struggling with financial issues but are showing excellent academic performance.

The Sonny Roden Memorial Scholarship honors L.H. (Sonny) Roden, Jr. who is known as a dedicated servant of the Virginia Water Pollution Control Association.
Besides the money, the scholarship winner will receive a free one-year membership to VWEA.
Who's eligible?
The Sonny Roden Memorial Scholarship is $2,500 and is awarded annually by Virginia Water Environment Association.
The scholarship committee has determined the criteria for the scholarship and it is the following:
Students must be enrolled in an environmental engineering or science graduate program at a Virginia university, full- or part-time.
They must have a 3.25 or greater grade point average and better academic results can improve your chances of becoming the recipient of the award.
Judging and selection will be performed anonymously by the VWEA Scholarship Committee according to the following ranking system
- Academic Performance (10 points)
- Participation in VWEA events (10 points)
- Extracurricular activities (20 points)
- Work/research experience (30 points)
- Essay (30 points)
How to Apply
The applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay in which they will provide an answer to the question “What is the most significant water quality issue today, and why?”
The essay may be submitted for publication in VWEA’s newsletter – The Conduit if the applicant allows.
The additional documentation that has to be provided is a completed VWEA Sonny Roden Memorial Scholarship application, a resume proving the applicant’s academic performance, extracurricular activities and work experience, as well as unofficial or official transcript showing GPA 3.25 or above.

The application deadline is May 24th and the scholarship winner will be awarded during the Joint Annual Meeting (Water JAM) held in Virginia Beach on September 10th.
