Telegraph Herald Scholastic Journalist Award

The Telegraph Herald Scholastic Journalist Awards are aimed at high school seniors studying within the Telegraph Herald’s circulation area and the award is there to help them achieve higher education goals.

The award recipient will receive a one-time $1,500 scholarship award and a commemorative plaque.

The winner will be selected according to the following criteria.

The overall quality of the portfolio and the Nominee’s essay will most affect the selection.

the Impact/significance of work and the Leadership qualities will also have an impact on the judges, while the least important, but still taken into considerations will be the Creativity/originality of work and letters of recommendation.

Who's eligible?

If you are interested in applying for the Telegraph Herald Scholastic Journalist Award, you are probably eager to know what the selection criteria will be and determine whether to apply or not.

The applicants must be seniors at high schools in the Telegraph Herald service area and must be active in the editorial aspect, such as news, web, sports, features, photo and art/graphics of newspapers.

Ineligible applicants are not suggested to apply, as their applications will not be taken into consideration.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit portfolios demonstrating experience, talent, and leadership in newspaper journalism if they want to get this scholarship.

The complete application package should include a letter from the journalism adviser or faculty member,  in which he/she will be speaking about the student’s activities and performance in newspaper journalism.

It should include email addresses for a student and adviser.

Furthermore, six non-returnable published works, mounted on 8 1/2 x 11-inch sheets and accompanied by the student’s written comments about the portfolio have to be submitted and it can consists of the work published in newspapers other than school publications, such as community weeklies or the TH.

Last but not least, the applicant has to provide an essay which should not be more than 500 words long in which he/she will describe the impact journalism has had on him or her personally.
