The scholarship is provided by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund which partnered with AFSCME to provide access to diverse talent and expose competitive students to careers within the labor union movement.

TMCF scholarships are both merit and need-based designed to address the financial needs of students and the awards process is highly competitive.

The winner will be outstanding and qualified students who plan to earn a baccalaureate, graduate or law degree and they will be determined by a group of experienced people who will review all the application materials.

You should get acquainted with the application timeline so as to make sure you finish the application process on time and this timeline is subject to change.

The online application will be available from January to February for Fall Scholarships and from August to October for Spring Scholarships.

The applicant selection for the TMCF/AFSCME Union Scholarship will be in March or Apri while the scholarship award notification will take place in May or June.

The average award is $3,100 per student per semester and usually, there are three lucky recipients per year.

However, this is prone to change annually, so you should get familiar with it once the scholarship application process opens.

Who's eligible?

So as to be accepted as a regular candidate for this award you will need to meet the criteria set by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund committee.

The eligible applicants are minority sophomores or juniors, who have a minimum 2.5 GPA and who are able to demonstrate an interest in working in social and economic justice through the labor union movement.

Ineligible applicants are suggested not to waste their time applying, while those eligible ones should not wait anymore but try their luck.
