The WHS’ NEXTGen Border Security Contest is provided by the Women in Homeland Security (WHS)’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) initiative.
The reason for providing this award is the seeking of solutions that recognize the challenges of securing the borders of the United States and encourages students to research the issue and consider the challenges that have hampered efforts for a secure border.

The winner will get a $2,500 award and there will be three lucky recipients.
Who's eligible?
Among all the applicants the best of the best winning solutions will be selected.
The applicants should know that their solution should recognize the difficulty managing porous and underground terrain, lack of reliable sensor monitoring/detection, the inconsistency of information transmission to command centers, bad weather providing “false positives”, presence of law enforcement personnel, among others.
There is no GPA requirement for this scholarship and the Eligible Grade Levels are High School Freshman, High School Sophomore, High School Junior, High School Senior who live in the state of Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC.
When the eligible majors are in question, they can pursue a degree in one of the following fields:
Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies, Fire Protection Engineering, Forensic Science, Genetics, Genomics, Materials Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Technology, Medicine, Microbiology, Molecular & Cell Biology, Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology, Nuclear Science & Engineering, etc.
How to Apply
Applicants interested in applying for the WHS’ NEXTGen Border Security Contest would need to answer the required questions and provide additional documents to support their applications.
The applicant is asked to describe his/her solution and what challenges in border security that it addresses.
The questions that he/she needs to answer are the following:
- In your research of the border security challenges, why did you focus on your category and project?
- Why and how do you believe this solution will enhance border security?
As a part of the application process, each applicant is asked to submit a video demonstration of his/her solution in which he/she will explain and demonstrate how it works, what problem it solves, and how it will enhance border security.
You can also send a PowerPoint presentation instead of a video.
The online application form has a button that should be used for the video demonstration/PowerPoint submission.
